Somehow this random topic just pop-ed into my head on my way back from work today. Basically there are 7 deadly sins or cardinal sins, which I would touch on in this post. Most explanations are copied off http://dictionary.com or from http://wikipedia.com.

Extravagance
excessive or unnecessary expenditure or outlay of money.

I guess many of us would fall under this category. Is it really necessary to buy branded goods? Shouldn't they pay you to wear their brand since it's a form of advertisement? =p There's nothing wrong with a little self indulgence, but when is it over-doing it? I'd say it's when someone is decked from head to toe in Prada, Chanel, Hermes, etc. Buying such branded goods for children and pets is definitely another form of extravagance to me.

Gluttony
excessive eating and drinking

Gluttony probably means more than excessive eating and drinking. Basically it's just an over-indulgence to a point that it's a waste. Sometimes, it is really necessary to eat so much? We eat mainly to function and of course as someone who loves food, to appreciate. But surely there's no need to eat till you're over-bloated all the time and doesn't it scare you watching your pants size increase every year? Drinking, especially alcohol also harms our health. I know I'm rather guilty of this, however, my saving grace is that I don't always drink so much all the time so hopefully my liver's kind to me and function properly.

Greed
excessive or rapacious desire, esp. for wealth or possessions

This is something I can relate to at the moment. Having won a small sum of money at the casino last night, I must confess it makes me feel like going back and fulfilling my "what if I can win more" urge. Of course having said that, the fact that I'm here blogging means that I'm not so addicted to go back to the casino tonight and try my luck. I'd admit I was worried I'd start losing my capital and when I started winning I felt like taking quite a few risks, however I'm glad I did manage to control to a certain extend and it is something I'd overcome in time.

Discouragement
an act or instance of discouraging

According to wiki, it's depression without joy and in the biblical terms, it's the willful refusal to enjoy the goodness of God. Probably when one is depressed, he/she is unable to enjoy how beautiful the world is despite of all imperfections. In a way, depression does affect those around the person which might hurt those closest to you.

Warth
strong, stern, or fierce anger; deeply resentful indignation; ire.

Wrath is a fire, and jealousy a weed. --Spenser. Anger when managed wrongly, causes one to lose his/her judgement which can result in undesirable consequences. How many stories have we seen in the news, of people being killed due to incurring the wrath of another. It could be due to your partner having a lover, someone you clashed with etc.

Envy
a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc.

There will always be someone out there that is better than you, but you know what the funny thing is? Maybe while you are there envying someone for maybe his fortune, the person might envy you, maybe instead of having a vast fortune, you have time with family? It's just a random example, but the morale is, the grass is always greener on the other side. Sometimes what you see is just the superficial, behind someone's wealth and success might be alot of sacrifices, alot of sleepless nights, unhealthy diets and maybe, just maybe your life isn't that bad after all.

Pride
a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc

Just how important is your pride? Saving your own pride might not be the best solution at times. Would you fail to acknowledge someone's good points or hard work because of your pride? Would you risk everything just so you can save your pride? It is important to love thyself, but sometimes one should just be humble, lose his pride or risk losing even the closest of friends and family. Having humility isn't all that bad after all.

Sloth
habitual disinclination to exertion; indolence; laziness

I know I'm quite guilty of this. How many hours lost and wasted just because I'm too "lazy" or "tired" to start on my work etc. Sometimes just being a little bit more hardworking isn't all that bad. A new skill could be learnt during that time, a new dish created or even learning a new language.

Lust
uncontrolled or illicit sexual desire or appetite; lecherousness

How many families have we seen broken, how many relationships lost because of lust. Is it really that hard to commit to one? I know I'm not really in the position to say much but sometimes it's food for thought. I know my reasons for certain actions and it is interesting to find out reasons behind another person's lack of commitment.

Well I think I've covered about 9 sins, do take what I've written with a pinch of salt, it's mostly personal views from what I gather from the definitions found. Anyhow no one's perfect but it doesn't mean you're loved any less =)

Take care folks
